an Archaeologist or a grave-robber. from Daniel Oneman's blog

Archaeologist. Yes, i am talking about those scientists  who go around digging up tombs, Buldozing  hills, caves and valleys hoping to find material culture to help them understand the difference between the eating habit of a Australopithecus anamensis and Australopithecus africanus if those guys ever existed.

Archaeologist have made major discoveries in years ranging from  discovery of king Tut  tomb ( Egyptian pharaoh of the 18th dynasty) to the tomb of Qin Shi Huang the first emperor of China.

This discovery have made this  scientists both famous and Successful making this a very good reason for many  people to turn to Archaeology. But before you start showing up on people graves or tombs with shovels and pickaxes you might want to understand some few important concept which may protect you from ending up in a hollow cube of concrete with no windows for a period of not less than 25 years for disinterment of dead bodies .

The questions that many people have are ,When is it OK For Archaeologists to Dig Up the Dead?  or How much time has to pass before grave robbing is considered Archaeology?. Many people may answer this question by telling you that  In the world of antiques, the general rule is that an item between 75 and 100 years old is a valued collectible but the truth is there is no point where grave robbing becomes  archaeology.

Let us take the discovery of King Tut tomb for example when Howard Carter and  Lord Carnarvon discovered this tomb they shared the news with the world, many scientific research and experiments have been made on the discovered artifacts, architecture, biofacts  found in the tomb this have assisted in understanding the life of King Tut and  Ancient Egypt at large. But what if when they made this discovery this two Archaeologist kept it for themselves and started making a fortune out it by selling the discovered artifacts.Would this have been considered Archaeology or grave robbery?.This tomb was 3000 years old (30 times the age which an item is valued collectible).

What i am trying to say is that the difference between Archaeology and grave-robbery can't be explained by how old a tomb or grave being excavated is but on the goals of the people who are perform the  excavation.

The main goal of Archaeologist  study of past human activity through the recovery and analysis of material culture but for the grave robbers is getting  profit from valuable artifacts or personal effects found in this tombs and that is the main difference between this two groups of people.
